Immunoglobulin-like cell adhesion molecules (IgCAMS), like cadherins, are generally single-span type I transmembrane proteins (Brummendorf & Rathjen 1996, Rougon & Hobert 2003). The IgCAMS represent one of the most ancient and diverse families of cell adhesion proteins. Members of this adhesion protein family have diverse mechanisms of function. Some have homophilic binding specificity; others have heterophilic specificity and interact with other IgCAMs; and some interact with cell surface proteins of different classes, notably the integrins.
