ADAM metallopeptidase domain family
Giving unique and meaningful names to every human gene

As of 1st December 1998 this gene family has been assigned the approved stem symbol ADAM#. Responses to this new scheme can be viewed at "Your responses page". Following an original request from the MEROPS database to standardise our gene names with the use of the term peptidase, in place of both protease and proteinase, we posted a recent "Hot Topic" on our webpage, where the responders also agreed with this move. Hence we have decided to phase out use of the terms 'protease' and 'proteinase' in favour of the umbrella term, 'peptidase'. As such the ADAM gene names were revised, with the consent of our Specialist Advisor Dr White, on 18th August 2005. Information on the evolution of these peptidases can be found in MEROPS, described by the Peptidase family M12, and other information about the ADAM# genes can be found in Dr White's Table of ADAMs.
